Fraunhofer R&D Center for Electromobility Bavaria is developing a cost-effective sensor system can be directly integrated into the battery, the battery is measured, the precision is higher than that of the battery management system currently on the market.


Deficiency of battery management system

The battery management system can measure the electric quantity of each core based on current and voltage. Because the current of the system is based on the default value, it is easy to make mistakes. For frequent partial charge and specific battery types, it may not be possible to accurately measure the battery's amount of electricity. In addition, the system will consume part of the battery's own power.


The accuracy of ultrasonic pulse detection is higher

Fraunhofer ISC uses an ultrasonic pulse to test the state of the battery. The energy density of the negative electrode will change with the state of the charge and discharge of the electric core, and the estimated value of the battery can be directly measured and given from this parameter.

The advantages of this method are many: because the linear relationship between battery power and measured signals, the evaluation method is simpler and more precise. The test unit can monitor several cores at the same time. It can detect battery power in charge and discharge process without permanent control, which saves energy and saves money.

Because the ultrasonic signal is directly related to the mechanical properties of the core, taking into account the aging of battery materials, the remaining quantity is more accurate, which can show the performance of the battery more accurately.
The new sensor system is suitable for all kinds of batteries, and lithium ion batteries are the most suitable. The applications of the equipment include electric vehicles, fixed energy storage systems and unmanned aerial vehicles.
