Solid-state Batteries Commercialization Ushers in "Spring"?

Cailian Society     2023-07-26

The news that Solid-state batteries has made major breakthroughs successively released in the academic world seems to indicate that this field, which is generally favored by the industry, is about to usher in a qualitative breakthrough.

The latest research results published in Science by the research team of Tokyo Institute of Technology show that all Solid-state battery with large capacity and large current characteristics have been successfully realized, thus making these two performances become new benchmarks for global Solid-state battery. Almost at the same time, the internationally famous academic journal Nature Communication also published the latest research results of Ma Cheng, a professor of the University of Science and Technology of China - a new type of solid electrolyte with comprehensive performance similar to the most advanced sulfide and chloride solid electrolyte, but its cost is less than 4% of the former, which is suitable for industrial application.

The research results of University of Science and Technology of China published in Nature Communication show that Professor Ma's research no longer focuses on any of oxides, sulfides and chlorides, but turns to oxychlorides to design and synthesize a new solid electrolyte lithium zirconium oxychloride. This material has a strong cost advantage. If hydrated Lithium hydroxide, Lithium chloride and zirconium chloride are used for synthesis, the cost of raw materials is only 11.6 dollars per kilogram; However, if hydrated zirconium oxychloride, Lithium chloride and zirconium chloride are synthesized, the cost of lithium zirconium oxychloride can be further reduced to about US $7 per kg, which is far lower than the most cost competitive solid electrolyte lithium zirconium chloride (US $10.78 per kg), and less than 4% of sulfide and rare earth based and indium based chloride solid electrolytes.

Although the commercialization of all Solid-state battery faces many difficulties, the industry is still optimistic about this new thing with higher energy density, higher safety, longer cycle life, better low-temperature performance and other performance advantages.

There is no doubt that the decade before 2030 will be a critical period for Solid-state battery wrestling.
