2021/7/10 Long Term Performance of LG Chemical Lithium Sulfur Battery Re-verified

Recently, LG Chemical announced that its prototype lithium sulfur battery has successfully completed several high altitude flights of the solar powered unmanned aircraft EAV-3 developed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute.

EAV-3 is about 9 meters long and has a wingspan of about 20 meters. It uses solar panels to collect electric energy for driving. The energy density of the lithium sulfur battery is 50% higher than that of the most advanced lithium-ion battery on the market. According to the calculation, it is about 400 watt hours / kg (LG Chemical has not disclosed the exact value yet).

In this validation, EAV-3 has been tested for about 13 hours, with a flight time of nearly 7 hours and a maximum altitude of22 km. For lithium sulfur battery, another important significance is to test and verify its stable charge / discharge function in stratospheric extreme environment, where the temperature is as low as -70. The atmospheric pressure is about 1 / 25 of the ground level.

LG Chemical also plans to launch lithium sulfur batteries to the market after 2025, with an energy density target of twice that of current lithium-ion batteries. However, from the perspective of vehicle power batteries, it is not known whether these lithium sulfur batteries can meet the requirements of cycle life and power output of electric vehicles, and these two aspects are the bottleneck of lithium sulfur battery technology.
