2021/8/7 About 30 Companies Including GS Yuasa Set Up New EV Battery Committee

    2021-04-26

With the acceleration of global decarbonization movement, about 30 domestic related companies have been added, such as GS Yuasa, a major battery manufacturer, to steadily produce and supply on-board batteries for electric vehicles (EV).

Yomiuri Shimbun reported under the title of "electric vehicle battery safety strategy, 30 companies' board of directors, enhancing competitiveness and competing with China". According to the report, a general association composed of the "battery supply chain council" will be set up in April, and will work with the Ministry of economy, trade and industry to develop strategies, such as refining rare metals such as lithium, and making rules and recycling.

In addition to GS Yuasa, many related companies such as prime planet Energy & solutions, a joint venture between Toyota and Panasonic, and Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd., which provides raw materials such as nickel and lithium, will also participate.

With regard to the background of the establishment of the new Council, the article points out that "China has the largest (market) share in vehicle batteries". Japanese companies are cooperating to purchase rare metals and other raw materials in a stable way, which will lead to the expansion of battery production "with the aim of enhancing international competitiveness".

About the Public-Private Partnership Council On Electric Vehicles: the "chademo Council" was set up in 2010 to expand fast chargers and standardize charging methods. At the beginning, TEPCO was the steering wheel, but after the East Japan earthquake on March 11 the following year, Nissan and Mitsubishi have been playing a central role in promoting the popularity of fast chargers. However, some members are reluctant to popularize electric vehicles, and they have not cooperated with each other in history. Even in the new Council, the key to enhancing competitiveness seems to be whether companies with interests can deepen cooperation and commit to "all Japan".
